what is Post traumatic growth?

Peter A. Levine defines trauma as

“Biologically, trauma is organized around the (fear-potentiated) tonic immobility response present in animals from insects to man. The key to resolving trauma is in ‘uncoupling the fear from the paralytic immpbility allowing the intense energies bound in the immobility state to be accessed, freed and ultimately to be tranformed.”

“Trauma happens when the organism is strained beyond its adaptational capacity to regulate states of arousal. The (traumatized) nervous system disorganizes, breaks down and cannot reset itself. This manifests in global fixation, in a fundamental loss in the rhytmic capacity to self-regulate arousal, to orient, to be in the present and to flow in life”

what is somatic experiencing?

SE is a therapeutic approach to the resolution of post-traumatic stress reactions. It offers hopeful perspectives on trauma as a vehicle for growth and views humans as beings endowed with an instinctual capacity to heal as well as the intellectual spirit to harness that innate capacity.

We see that in the wild, animals respond to acute stress in a way that allows for a full recovery of their nervous systems. Humans possess regulatory mechanisms similar to that of animals, but we often override these systems by neo-cortical inhibiting (suppressing our instinctual responses to trauma by using the rational mind). We see that suppressing the body’s natural response leads to pain patterns of cognitive dysfunction, anxiety, a sense of intrusion and feelings of bracing and collapse.

Through focal awareness of bodily sensations (integral to SE therapy) individuals are able to access these restorative physiological action patterns. This allows the highly aroused survival energies to be safely and gradually neutralized. Unregulated arousal previously locked in the neuromuscular and central nervous system can be “discharged and completed” thus preventing and resolving traumatic symptoms. It is a process that is both reparative and generative.
